I have a few days of straight writing to achieve as I am looping all the various ideas and plans into on focused path. I guess that is what is odd with me, I am more of a spatial generalist than some specialist looking at only one thing. It amazes me how all the cross over and fertilization of one idea can be applied to other industries or needs. For now, this plan will keep me more than occupied for the rest of my life into one “focused” product group.
The idea meets prototype, meets, small run fabrication, and then license out the rest for those who enjoy needing new stuff to put into their distribution channels. As I look around the business landscape, I see a few prospering, and most just seeming to be busy getting by. The idea of live/work and following your passion isn’t’ all that common. To me, it always has been, but as I go into the more normal world, I realize most of it has bought into a different model or perspective of what reality is.
For example, my brother took me to an MLB game where I marveled at the technology and care for a baseball field, and I looked at the players, some making 10’s of millions of dollars and walked by the well-designed merchandise and food vendors and thought, “this is fun anymore? you have to pay for fun in the USA?”
I guess I smiled because there was a BBQ place called “boogs” BBQ and the man was sitting there doing photo ops within families. I stopped and smiled at the man. He is from an era when I would get taken to Yankee stadium, you would hang out by the wall during batting practice and players would sigh their autographs and even spent a few moments of small talk. It didn’t cost anything. It was free.
so I smiled as I doubt the man remembers when I was a little kid, I liked him cause his name was cool. “boog Powell” and then there was a guy named “Harmon Killebrew” that came up to me as a little boy and smiled and signed my program.
That was then. Today was metal detectors, bag searches, and all sorts of rules and such. The TV drivers have taken sports and created their own monster, of which sporting apparel companies are all too willing to put a logo on anything and have the consumer pay for that brand.
In the early years, I would go to burning man (late 90’s) I was thinking “what a great merchandising pull for an idea! Yet, “anti-corporate” and “no logo” was the vibe and theme. I understand today what they were asking for, and at the same time, I see billionaire Sherpa camps in place. These were not part of the plan, but it is like anything – people will exploit something to make more.
What does this have to do with sports and entertainment? I am sitting by a theme park writing. Fun to me is riding the old wooden coasters, and visually, I would love to get up in the golden hours or sunset and photograph them because of the character of the wood and architecture/design. that is fun to me.
Fun to me is creating these controlled environment spaces that have gone beyond plants into theory areas and reasons. What bothers me is that to grow as a human, the more change and non-repetitive workouts will bring the best resulted. The downside is you never feel very comfortable or in place. eventually, you get to realize that this is “normal.”
With the controlled rooms and spaces, you are taking and optimizing everything for the ultimate performance of a plant or a person. But when you step back, while the single function works or grows well – the reality is the planet is very complicated and not so simplistic.
While I don’t think the idea of rewarding a few at the expense of all for talent is new through the annals of history, I wonder about the watering down or dilution of excellence that we have done today with the idea of scaling everything? Maybe people think a few louvres or great pastry shops dotted around the planet is excellent. For me, I don’t. I would rather that rare and unique place where you have to go, and it isn’t a money grab.
Usually, what Is lost in a license is that the masses of people working don’t have the same passion for the folks that built or created the brand. And the quality to replicate the idea becomes more impersonal and the unique intangible elements that made the brand so cool get washed away in the dilution of business and branding.
If you need proof…just look at your Instagram feed, where there is a push of content that makes no sense to me as a human. People paying to brand themselves, when a more valuable way Is to simply put out and earn that brand over time.
it might be old school, but not with the modern-day definition of “stubborn AND stupid.” for a definition.
I just realized, and that is the beauty of these 10 minutes - i didn’t even write about aging and eyesight thoughts and observations. perhaps i will get to that tommorrow?
