I fear what is happening in Hong Kong these days is not going to bode well. let us hope my feelings are wrong. if you have never been to Hong Kong, it is a seeming mystical place that was the gatekeeper to Asia until Singapore became in my opinion the crossroads of Asia.
what I am seeing a few million people in protests that are a size I don't’ recall at any time in history. if you have ever walked among the buildings in central, you realize the size of just how many people are in the streets.
if you have ever crossed into mainline china, you realize that there are billions of people living in a country with different ideas, rules, regulations, and ways of thinking and living. while I believe president xi jinping understand the unique space Hong Kong plays in Chinas history and gateway to the west I wonder if there will be a strategic shift into shanghai for more cultural control?
what I hope doesn’t happen is some breakdown in communication and a mess happens because someone is just doing their job and/or the directives from above get misinterpreted into something different. today I paid another human a sincere compliment and they took it as somehow condescending. the more I take my communication course, the more I realize how most of us suck at communication.
here is to hoping that peaceful solutions and resolutions can happen in Hong Kong. if you look at the history of the island, you realize there is a great deal going on that the west doesn’t understand. did we really learn our lesson with the opium wars?
wait, isn’t there one raging inside the west today? OxyContin?
as a side note, I still remember the thrill of landing at the old Kai Tak airport in hong Kong, it was one of the neatest landings on the planet. today, you have a new and much more improved airport and I see the designs for Beijing and the other spaces. I probably would not worry so much if the leadership of china changed more, but what I sense is that just like any other culture that rises to power, the greed and pride of the leaders will overrun humility and common sense for the people. it is like Einstein said, “why are people so optimistic of the future when they can go back over the history of man and see what the reality was.” (a paraphrase)
