always be uncomfortable….if you are growing, while you never get used to or comfortable with the feeling, it is better than living in a controlled box where nothing changes…mainly yourself.
people have asked me what is the best way to grow and change and learn. I approach the entire problem In a different way that the norm of society that is taught. school with the method of sitting in neat rows reading books to memorize, remember long enough to regurgitate, and then forget appears to be a far too common, as well as not the best way to get people to understand the theory as well as the practical reality and transition into the world.
it is why I am saddened by the state of most make spaces in the united states with an academia twist. common sense seems to be in short supply as you add more PhD’s to the design committee.
another problem is they say there are good players, they play. the not so good ones coach. there is a great deal to be said in that each of us has unique talents and gifts. with athletics, some people were simply born with a different set of physical gifts. with academia, others have a propensity to live more a cerebral reality. the real world, of which I am so grateful for all the travel and shows we did, as well as the research and development of ideas brought for a LOT of ways to look at a problem or idea.
perhaps that is the problem today. people are taught one way and think, “what? there might be others?”
what I love is the idea, conceptualization, design, prototype, and then pass off the final. the reason is there is a whole lot going on with the front end the multiple iterations of working in a skunkworks space allow a great deal to be done in a shorter time period than with normal linear work practices. I think that is the part of the world that drives me a bit nuts. I have to wonder what and how many people think about something, and how few take a step to try to make it reality.
yesterday I was chatting with a man and we were both confused how fear seems to have people thinking less of their idea and dream and more about counting nickels and pennies. the irony is that the people who have had to make all the mistakes and learn by doing, usually have a better idea of what will or won’t work. I don't’ know why this advice is not heeded or there is some fear/control issue to change in many peopl
perhaps I just wrote myself into the reason for this blog post. if you are ever allowed to have the tools and space around you to create and build. it is a bit of heaven on earth. today you have inexpensive and decent quality tools that you can pretty much build anything. in 10-25 years all the 3d technologies will allow for amazing changes in how we build and create. what is rapidly changing in the consumer distribution is the speed of how you can get parts to a place. the future will be you simply make many things on site. trust me, it is a really wonderful way to work. you don’t spend the time with a linear build, or hear, “it’s always been done this way!”
there are some things you can’t change, like the laws of known nature, gravity, physics, etc. it is like when designing acoustical treatment spaces versus using digital tricks with variable room acoustics to get a space to sound great. I tend to go with the treatment is better, but it also is a ton of science, and more of a ballet of art meets science that costs a bit of time and some money to get right. the uses of the digital tools is great, but I have yet to see it match the physical spaces yet. another issue is I think humans will lose what “good sound” is with the use of the earbuds.
when I think of live FOH sound and the current state of where it has gone in 50 years from the wall of sound, to line arrays and now articulated in line arrays and how good the systems sound for live – I think of the studio control rooms and have to confess that I love how the human body adapts to a great room. the difference is there is no digital fakery going on. the downside is if you were to pay someone to come in an build such spaces, it would be ridiculously expensive.
there was one group in north Carolina that I really have no idea what they are up to. have you ever seen people put dollars before their dream? it is one of those fear based realities. someone asked if I could help them, and when someone asks for help, it is not a business deal, it is about finding a solution to making their dreams become reality. I don’t think many people understand, much less the world leads with love and help versus fear and negative thinking?
this entire message was cut short by a an interesting lady with a casa Verde t-shirt on that happens to be old school computer coding. it means she was learning the same stuff I had to. she had a book “how to become an optimist” and I asked “why?”
“because all the people I know said I was the most optimistic person they ever met, and now, with that has happened post 2007 I realize I am more cynical. I don’t want to be that person.”
I have to thank the woman, as I was typing about the subjects of change and people. we were discussing different economic theories , of which I have to go look deeper into behavioral economics and what on earth is most of the USA thinking (or not thinking) as we talked, there was a little boy staring into his mobile we were discussing, his mother was an insecure woman that had no clue we were talking about the history of the modern computer, the internet, and the choice we as humans get to make with how to use the coming singularity and advanced AI technologies.
it is just the way it is.
all you have to do is go out into a space in the world where there is no light pollution from man and stare up to the night sky and observe the milky way with your naked eye.
we are one of BILLIONS of galaxies
yet man, and each individual – be it through pride, greed, lust? it is easy to think and believe we are somehow very special and forget just how tiny a piece of stardust we all are.
I guess that is where the understanding of gods pure love comes from. if we look at love from the perspective of two people on planet earth, and then pull back to the edges of the known universe and consider that the encompassment of pure love…
…man had a lot to learn. I hope we get a clue before we screw up the planet with our man made “super intelligent and evolved thinking.”
today you get a twofer…yesterday’s 10 minutes interrupted by a conversation about the future and then todays 10. if you can, go out and stare up at the night sky – sans human light. I bet your jaw drops.
