Each time I do a run through with the mathematics of content with social media and see the data, the easier it is to unplug each day. I am not sure what has happened to the internet, or if it merely followed the trajectory of what society always was? I just got to experience a new idea with the pioneers and early adaptors and watched the globe get carved back up into what it was before the internet? A few control much.
I thought the idea was for each person to allow freedom of information, and the world would become more democratic and understanding of that which is different from the perspective one knows?
Case in point. I am sitting in a coffee shop, and the conversation I hear is a few ideas, interlaced with heavy doses of profanity. Am I in a bar or a Starbucks? The area is not very transient with the locals, and the cliques and social construct were established a while ago. I guess the habit is people look at their social media feed for their information and knowledge.
It amazes me how few people just believe whatever they hear, particularly in the age and coming age of blatant manipulation of data to put something in the best light. It is like the data on a lot of Instagram accounts. For the life of me, I do not know, nor understand why there are a whole lot of people taking selfies of themselves each day.
I am amazed no one looks at the algorithms to see how what was a good idea is being monetized to make a few folks a whole lot of money and an immense amount of power. Perhaps the content providers are not even aware? They are just pushing the image of the beautiful self, one snapshot moment, which it appears there must be “posing’ lessons for selfies now. There are probably people paying a lot of money for people to “like” them and/or “brand” themselves.
It never ceases to amaze me what people will sell or give themselves away for. Today’s media bar is shallow.
But my testing on Instagram is done. It took a bit longer for the forces to act and react in the market to come mainstream. But the timeline is shorter than it was 25 years ago.
I honestly thought the internet would allow humanity to become more human. From a social aspect, it has merely allowed that which is similar to find each other. There is more discord with that which is different.
What I am thankful for, is that if you want to learn about anything, it is available to you. If you have a question about anything, you can get an answer in the click of a button. From the information side, and/or making life more convenient. The internet is doing well.
With the depth of people changing? I should record the political guys swearing away at 7 am in the morning and post them.
Any technology is simply a choice in how we want to use it. It all goes back to how a man wants to use it. It appears narcissism is a growing trend. I know too much about how the tech works and entertainment to realize “reality” is simply a perspective anymore.
Truth? What is that?
