I have a list of prototype ideas that if I started today and had all the equipment available, I probably could be busy the rest of my life. It is something that I always wonder about with people. If you are seeking just money, you seem to clarify life as a series of work to buy stuff, in the idea that it will make you happy. If you should be so fortunate to go after your dreams and passions, you find that you never really work a day in your life – the journey itself is the adventure.
I guess that is why I simply think work is "expending effort and resources to achieve the desired result." I think that definition is not the common one used by most of the planet.
This morning I was looking at how to help a friend and not thrilled with the grunt work that has to go into place just to get to the fun stuff. Perhaps that is what I see inside the united states. People don't want to do dirty or grunt work. Everyone wants to be on stage and the star or the boss. This is what bothers me about the current trajectory in American business being only about dollars and sense.
For example, I was flipping through tv channels as my dad slept in his chair and realized there is a lot of junk on TV. I stopped at what I thought was an excellent idea for a show called "shark tank" and 30 years ago, I would agree with everything they are saying. Scale, size, costs, profit margins, marketing, distribution. It is what I was really good at on the "business" side, yet, my passion was always in the tinkering and invention side in how things work and how can we create new and exciting things that were initially to help people forget a bit and be entertained.
Post 9-11, we went from entertainment to, "how can we help people be better people – sans the manipulation and illusion? This part saddened me a bit, as the idea of creating anything you can imagine was something amazing to me. While the technologies were not ready for mainstream – what entertainment will soon be will be mind-blowing. My concern is the disconnect between the illusion of digital FX and the reality of a human being doing amazing things with talent – will be considered boring to the audience?
I don't worry about this with "live' performers that really have talent, as they really are that good. The problem is there aren't that many people on the planet with that level of talent. We seem to have just built a distribution system where "scale" and "bigger is better" is merely diluting and watering down the bar for exceptional.
Perhaps this is why in the next few weeks we are doing a bit of a retrenching into finally working our way back to the core that is really meaningful and important to us and then using all the merchandising, marketing, licensing knowledge that will allow people who want to just grow giant businesses - to do that. I could wake up in a skunkworks space and probably never leave – except that I have learned to put balance into my life instead of being sucked into the work. I have to confess, full immersion into a project is really cool – however, it doesn't make the best human being.
I guess that is where the new work is. "can we help someone." the research data is sad on how many people actually want to change. Truth be told, if you really look at it for what it is, it is downright depressing for the future of the country and the planet. I think Einstein or DaVinci had a quote about "why is a man so optimistic, despite looking back at the history of man and realizing he keeps repeating the same not so great things" (a really bad paraphrase)
So today…I am doing something which is not skunkworks. So I have to run around and do a lot of grunt work and will probably be working until sunset to get some dirty work done. After that…the somewhat fun might start, all to get to the "fun" stages.
It all boils down to a reality that in your mind, you can design and see anything. To get that idea out of your mind into a viable final WYSIWYG prototype takes a lot of time, trials, errors, iterations and "what if's." this is a part that few realize is a cost. To go into the final phase or replication of the product/service/idea is another set of things that have people competing and many will do anything to step over another to gain more for themselves at the expense of others.
It is the last line that has had me change, and I am not sure if we can make a limited, high quality, great product - and simply keep it that way. It is not going out to conquer the world, but rather do something good. When I was younger, I thought money and stuff was the meaning of life. It turns out it is interest and cool – but it means nothing, as you can't take it with you. What does say something is using the time to help another – be it shoveling dirt, or fabricating the most sophisticated controlled environment for a plant or person?
Yesterday I was in church, and I am lamenting how it seems that a lot is missing from the overall picture of life. Instead of calling the church a place for the righteous to go and think they are so good, why not simply call it a doctor's office or fitness center for the soul? I don't know anyone perfect on this planet.
When I go see the monks, I call that space more of a trauma center for the soul, as it is one of the few places where I have healers that have actually first healed themselves helping others. There is a shortage of people that have actually done the work, there are a plethora of people all telling others what needs to be done that haven't done the work
So that is my ramble as I meditated and fought to be still while I have a lot of things to get done that are not really similar. It makes the time more challenging, as I know how much time I will waste running around getting things done. It is something I really don't like, as I have all the time data to support just how much time many waste driving the circle of life and commenting.
It had me smile thinking f a conversation with two masters students in biology at the café. One was Chinese, the other Greek = and it was abnormal, or a bit of the past where the discussion of computer ethics and other systems was talked about. The one young lady and I were both proponents of autonomous driverless vehicles that were simply a work suite with coffee machines on wheels that had up/down links to allow work.
Oh yeah, I have to see the mobile live/work space. It is more like touring a show that some box on wheels. hmm
Now I have to go play in the dirt. Do a bunch of dirty work….at least It will help my physical fitness with farmer's muscles. What are the farmer's muscles? They are like brick mason or any other type of worker that lifts things all day long – they develop incredible strength over time. No gym needed
As for me sitting in a space working up ideas till the day i die…yes, i hope that happens, as i see so many people limiting themselves and not pushing to grow and change. it saddens me, yet, what i can do is build spaces for people to come and try to change - the choice - i believe has to be thiers. if you force someone to change - is that really going to ever last in the long term?
