maybe I am a space alien and never knew it?
In the past week I have been around people, and there is no real purpose or issue with getting together. It is just time to spend with friends and family who you love. I still marvel at how many people I know that don’t like being around their family. There is only one part of the time I am with folks where I get confused, and that is wherever you are on the planet, there seems to be some cultural “norm” or model that is adhered to. Most of my life has been spent living and working on the road with shows, and/or locked into skunkworks style r&d project labs where you are thinking of new ideas, not next seasons linear progression of what color might be popular in the market.
There is a need for people to do each, yet, when I listen to the norm of conversations, I feel more and more alien with the type of people and personalities I have worked with versus the typical day to day mentality I watch/see/hear in public spaces. It has me truly wondering about the “woo woo” rooms we are working with AND the need for humans to stop plugging into a media stream that tends to not have them ask, “why?” very often.
There is also the sum of experiences and projects that construct peoples comfort levels with their beliefs. They say there is nothing wrong with being obedient to some set of rules/regulations/legalism, yet, where is the life in it? A good example is the 3d print lab project we are working on for an artist friend. You can make a 3d print/scan/model of anything, yet, the computer doesn’t bring the life to it when you see the final output. It is technically precise but usually lifeless. Do you want to live in a world like this? The future is going to look more and more like this each day.
For example, I was in a good sporting store where a batting cage simulator setup was used as a way to engage kids in swinging a bat on a t-ball setup. According to the kid, he was crushing home runs in a major league stadium. I watched the speed, technique, and power and wondered, “what kind of enhancement were they using in the algorithm or modifying of the data” all to enhance the ego of the participant and sell more products.
so I walked behind the operator, and voila, I should not be surprised as everything has gone the way of photography and computers are focusing, enhancing, bring perfect exposure and everything into the fields so that you really can be an idiot and take great images.
this young man was a superstar on the computer, but the reality is he probably didn’t get one hit out of the infield.
What world do you want to live in? The enhanced “make up” version? Or do you want reality? I am torn with another acoustic project that has the people seeming not able to make a decision, and I know the end result of using old school treatments versus all the digital tricks we use with variable room acoustics (fancy way to say we digitally correct bad acoustics) versus the reality and physics of a space…no manipulation.
The reality there is unless you design and build a few, you probably don’t realize how much goes into trying to get to that fantastic acoustic space. I am not talking about noise reduction or some room that reduces reverb….but rather one where all you hear is what is coming at you off the stage. If you should be so lucky to experience audio in that dimension, you will probably turn off most of your audio devices and wait to go back to space to “hear” acoustic precision
the odd part is most of the world thinks earbuds is excellent audio.
That is where I am these past few days…I listen to what is essential to many people’s lives, and I can relate. That was a while ago I felt the same way. Today, I learned most of what we think is so important, is actually irrelevant, perhaps a source of noise to keep us busy in our ever-increasing noisy world.
It Is about what is important. It is about helping others dreams come true…yet, I don’t see it really inside the united states and dollars, greed and insecurity are what seem to channel people into a limited mindset of thinking and perception. It is one thing I miss about working in live shows around the planet. I have the skunkworks lab that is shifting from having to know 25 different skills to more about coding, programming, and pushing a few buttons for automation and fabrication.
the market – seems to be more about consuming, instant gratification, and the idea of quality is eroding with the optimization of scaling an idea and thinking the quality can stay at the high level with building larger organizations and licensing a name.
It is a problem I have with business today. Market cap and scale seem to be the buzzwords of the day. Helping people realize their dreams, seems odd or foreign to most, and/or they don’t appreciate or care that they need help with something.
Thankfully, my one friend drilled into me in the past few months. “mark, get out of the convincing business.” with that, I have to focus on what appears to be selfish and just releasing our work. it is odd, the same person asked, “how did you learn to do so many different things?”
I tried to do it the normal way, but few really want to help, and everyone was happy to charge lots of money for everything. I didn’t have that much money, so I started learning how to use the tools to make things. Today, I know how much things cost to make – yet – people keep wanting to spend top dollar. It makes little sense. I can’t change what is “perceptions in humans, I can only change myself.”
But in a few days, I have a meeting with someone that will be another portion of the umbrella we are creating. And simply move forward. I really did try to become more of a sharing economy model, find ways to give humans jobs in the age of advanced artificial intelligence and what I found is the majority of folks probably won’t change until some catastrophic or cataclysmic seismic change to their life happens.
I never pray something like that, even for my worst enemy, but I have to let go of helping people that talk about needing help but don’t listen.
