I spent a few hours yesterday throwing out a seemingly simple idea to act as a barometer of sorts to the world and humanity to a smart friend. I miss conversations like this as the level of thinking is at a different plane than much of the planet is probably thinking about. We were in a café, and while discussing the idea, I looked around the room to see we were the only two people having a conversation. The others seemed buried in their mobiles and tablets. A few were working into laptops
When I follow the trends of Russian, China, and the USA with the internet, there should be a giant red flag waving for anyone interested in the truth or the reality of the planet. I think it was 1992. I got on the public internet? When I got off the road in 1994, the first thing installed was an ISDN line into the house. it confused the local telephone company as to “why?”
During that time, my silicon valley nerd friends would be yapping about open source and information being free while running into the race of burn rate and FY money and fame. What is FU money? It is having so much that you can say “f*ck you” to anyone. It has led to the current state of the economy and market cap lunacy with IPO’s and very little profit being the norm versus the old time P/E ratio. It has also led to a few companies having obscene power and access to data that used to be in the domain of only nation-states and governments.
There have been three spurts and crashes with the internet, an I think another one is coming along in the next year or two. I watched an epode of shark tank last night were some older man explained how he was burnt out with olive oil and when the judges all said, “you are the first guy we have had on here, that told what life is really like as an entrepreneur” it had me shudder. People are trading paper to maximize ROI. are we building things to help humanity.
so my odd idea that came out of the ashes of having the audience control the show when 9-11 hit – turned into something more prominent when I asked some UN friends, “what is the value of knowing when humans were about to flash over into conflict zones?”
“if you can buy 30 minutes, even 30 seconds, you can prevent a war.”
Thus, my interesting dilemma today is not freedom and democracy in the world wide web. Instead, what is the temperature of the world inside what is being chopped up, controlled, censored and manipulated with the world wide web?
I remember the Arab spring. There was a mindless loop from the one TV journalist reporting live, and there was a looped background of gunfire playing. My guess is the producer was all giddy and said, “loop that gunfire! It is so dramatic!” while (I think his name is Anderson Cooper?) talked
on the internet, there was a period where peopled communicated to the outside world and y big question was, “ok, I doubt you succeed in a revolution, as the military controls Egypt, but what do you want, “we want democracy!”
“what does that mean to you, this term democracy!”
There was always silence. No one could answer. It was then I knew how easily mistakes could be made with foreign policy and brilliant people in Washington not having a clue how native speaking and culture would have their idea of “we will show up, and they will embrace democracy!” was so flawed.
they don’t even know what it is.
My example is me plugging in each day to study German and feeling like a complete imbecile. I am learning terms and words that are NOT anything like the Swiss German that is spoken and around me. in a small sense, it is a microcosm of experiential learning with myself that is how the world is/can or can’t bend along. It is the ability of native language understanding.
I have an idea to allow that language to be understood globally, at a humanistic level.
One big idea I have had in my life. The shows were big, but this one idea was one of the few that could be a global entity
What is odder is that the idea would have to be free to keep out the influence of manipulation. I wonder how to get the data out of some areas in the world.
it is a data scientist wet dream.
this is a good idea, and I have simplified it to a place to do it, and it can scale, for the benefit of reality on this planet.
Who knew a simple idea 22 years ago would turn into what it can today. What bothers me is there is a “need” and not a, “want” to the problem.
