I find it hard to believe that not too many years ago we were working on a giant immersive audio/visual show that you could create and put any idea into…also, allow the audience to control the “what” and “how” they wanted to hear and see it. Then 9-11 happened, and I found myself on my back losing a battle in a world that I was taught, “go down with the ship and keep fighting.”
That last piece of advice is excellent for making beautiful cinematic moments. For the actual living, there is no disgrace in retreating or retrenchment to fight another day. What good is winning a battle if you lose the war?
What has changed since 9-11 is we have pivoted entertainment and escapism to using the technologies to help people step away from the fantasy, escape, manipulation, and image enhancement that I am seeing everywhere in the world today – except nature? I see mother nature doing mind-blowing things for real, and there is no photoshop, fancy edits, influencer peddling whatever it is they peddle and shill. Nature is and will do what nature does and has done for billions of years. It is humans I wonder about how long we will be living on the planet and/if we will destroy it with our waste and activity?
I tried to watch the us news last night and happily switched to the BBC world and the Bloomberg Asia desk. I get more deep news in 5 reading and following the ticker on the right side of the screen than most us newsgroups report in hours as I guess the US market doesn’t think anyone can read or process information anymore. A newscaster has to tell you what the news is, of which, what good is biased news reporting?
Is there a mathematical formula for profits and capitalism where a sense like a P/L – (profit to lie ratio) works out that once you pass a certain threshold, you lose reality with what you are saying as truth?
We all lie. Heck, there are even organizations on the planet that teach you how to. I guess it is no different from telling a young, idealistic mind to sign up and go overseas into harm’s way for the ideology of democracy and freedom and forget to mention it really might be a way to help the industrialized military complex not have to pivot and turn the weapons into less profitable peaceful uses? I wish there were a simple truth to it all. What I have learned is that rarely is something black or white. Instead, it is multiple shades of gray.
The irony is that there are organizations that teach you white, black, and gray lying techniques.
I guess in my effort, to be honest with myself in my journey, once I stopped lying to myself, I started to look at humanity and to try to be unbiased with a new set of eyes. Perhaps I just took off my rose-colored glasses and realized the truth is freeing once you get past that initial stage of crushing your self-image. After that…it gets pretty simple. Even in a highly complex world
I have to prototype that gizmo and some shirts about how we see…geeks would like them.
