Coming back into the united states, I am amazed at the amount of waste and trash we create. A large part of it might be the packaging and poor recycling programs in the states. Last I knew, these were money losers and municipalities were burning the trash versus recycling it. When you add to it the amount of noise from media, politicians, and people all trying to get their individual wants and desired heard under the moniker of freedom of speech, all I hear is a lot of noise. Anyone else feel the same way?
When the progression evolved, and the agrowbox turned into agrowspace, I was sitting on top of a mountain realizing there was no water, power, shelter, or food. while I was not far from a major us city, in essence, to be cost-effective, I would have to live off the grid. It was on that tree stump looking at a 300-degree panoramic view of nature’s beauty that the sketchbook and the reality of what one needs came about.
When I say, “needs” it wasn’t just to survive, but rather to have a decent, comfortable, and abundant life. Nature has a fantastic beauty and sound to it that if you get out of the urban environments for more than a few days and turn off your electronics – you realized your body has a rhythm that probably is more in tune with nature than with what our lives are that most live in our cities and urban spaces.
In the cities, I have a lot of friends touting urban and vertical farms, I have psychology and psychiatry friends all asking about “do you think empathogens are a good idea for people with PTSD, or other anxiety issues?” when I look at the trendy parametric architecture designs, I wonder, “biomimicry is a compliment, but these designs are simply possible because of computer technologies and the ability to simply morph a design with software. while one could sketch it, I hate to think how many people it would take to draw the blueprints by hand.”
So we have this world where there is plenty of folks trying to get rockets into space and explore the great unknown. I probably was like that when I was in the entertainment world – the implode thy audience with anything you can imagine was and today is very possible. Why I haven’t seen anyone do it? I don’t know…I think for the same reason that we had years ago. With experiential things, you can’t really explain them, particularly to people that live inside a narrow box in life.
I guess that is the irony of today. There is great beauty in silence and quiet, the noise of nature. What is happening is megacities will soon be the norm for humans in 30 years, and the question is how will nature blend into such spaces outside of a flower in a pot. I took a picture of a building in NYC last week. It was a purple flower in a window of a building where there was nothing else in any window. Just one flower in an entire multi-floor apartment building. Now that I think about it, as I walked the city trying to get answers to my urban farming questions, more nudes and sculptures were pointing out of the windows than plants.
Today I will be modifying designs and seeing how much the materials are to build a few prototypes out for refining foods. That seems to be a trend these days as there is so much waste thrown away inside the united states that there is a lot of good that can be done with it. I guess it is like bugs for protein sources…it is too creepy of an idea in a country that wants everything packaged and everyone runs around with hand sanitizer gels. Even at the gym, I am amazed at how germophobic people are with the lotions and spray. While I am all for cleanliness, it is a gym, people will sweat, and I think the odds are better that people will be getting healthier with exercise than not.
I can think of several places in urban environments that probably could use all the spray bottles and fumigation tools. Public restrooms in Starbucks restaurants come to mind. It would be interesting to see if you had a clean room, and then threw some paper on the floor, would the following people just add more trash to it? Or has society gotten to the point where no one cares and is willing to pick up the garbage of another? You get some cascade event that creates a habit that leads to an avalanche of trash?
Hmm…watching American media, reading all the socially cool tag lines from “brands” and seeing that the reality behind the facades is not in line with it…just has me think of the wizard of Oz movie. It was like doing a market survey for a print company I use. They are not inexpensive and have great products, why they were asking me about what funds to donate to or social message I like had me say, “I don’t care what you do with your profits. I have a problem with you tagging yourself with corporate buzzwords like ethical, socially aware, uber conscious, champions of the eco world….you are printers that make great products…why isn’t that enough? your work stands by itself.”
Maybe the people in marketing are adding more noise because they forgot what good sound is like? I blame it on too many earbud users trying to be hip and cool in the development of the megacities – and ignoring common sense and thinking the hype will stand on its own legs all the time?
Exciting times we live in. The technologies in the pipeline can provide incredible benefits to humanity. I just wonder how we will use them. To help the world become more democratic and understanding? Or to create walls of fear in insecurity and monetize them for profit?
enough of this gibberish…time to focus and build some ideas out. have a great day.
