It is a bit sad today, particularly after being around in the early 1990s and seeing the internet start for the public with the idea that it would bring a more democratic and open world. When monetization became the end all of the net, and the nation states all loved the term “globalization,” as long as it didn’t negatively affect their own turn. It appears there is a period of contraction happening now with walls and borders going up, be they physical, or electronic data walls. It just has one think of the term freedom and gives a sad laugh of sorts as one wonders, “how is it freedom if one carry around a digital chit that in the coming age of advanced artificial intelligence, will bring more manipulation than anything.
I think it was me watching the owner of an NBA team on the news berating a fan who acted a slight fool, with actions that made the owner the bigger fool. They say with great power comes great responsibility. If our leaders don’t work on their weaknesses – what will ever change?
When I think of the new rules, regulations, licenses to travel…I have been on both sides of the equation. For example, Brazil charges you for a visa to visit in an out of the country. I asked, “when did this happen?”
“when the united stated started charging money to Brazilian citizens to get into your country for a visa.”
tit-for-tat. Build more security walls and add more cameras and install all sorts of fancy predictive modeling software that will one day scan a crowd and pick that which is different. When I looked at the school system in China, I was saddened that there isn’t a whole lot of wiggle room for a child to be a kid anymore. You had a few favored emotional states, and if you fell outside of them, I wonder what happens to the child?
In some countries you have a strong push back for assimilation in that a smaller box view of the world of what is acceptable in that nation-state. if you don’t follow life in that box and, “do as the Romans” you are ostracized or ignored. “that person is different, turn your back.”
Maybe I am merely naïve in realizing that we are all humans. Thankfully we are not all the same with how we see or think, yet at the core, we are the same in wanting to be treated humanely or have others behave humanely.
I fear this isn’t going to happen in the short term. We have somehow lost our social barometer in the united states. It goes from leadership down to the homeless guy on the street.
Maybe I am changing? Perhaps growing? The planet is a beautiful little blue marble in the cosmos. I know as humans we can do a whole lot better than we have been. I just realize that to get over one's fears – you have to keep walking forward and continually change.
While periods of expansion and contraction are normal. Human chaos is probably abnormal with treating each other so poorly and putting up walls for anything that doesn't fall within the spectrum of the reality of each person’s and/or groups limited views and perspectives.
I have been blessed to wander a bit of the planet and see a lot. It has been a great gift. My advice to anyone is to get a pack and walk off the beaten path and instead of taking images of yourself to post on social media to show where you are….use that same time to make a photo of someone from the local culture and hear their story and views. That will do more to change you and is far more constructive than social media look-at-me-Itis.
my two free cents on a day where I am groggy and need my brain to go full speed asap.
