Earlier this year, I planted a bunch of tomato seeds as there is nothing better than the flavor of a fresh tomato you pick off the vine, wash, and put on your salad. Over the years, I have worked up what I call a “bonsai” pruning and forming technique that will produce trained plants that can shoot out a great deal of fruit in minimal space. You can increase the yield with hybrid natural light and additive light and temperature control when the sun goes down.
What I have this year, as I had to make a few trips, and my dad never got around to pruning anything is plants that are more like weeds. I mean they are everywhere and loaded with fruit that is green tomatoes. I am all for fried green tomatoes from time to time, with a lovely remoulade sauce – but the idea is to have beautiful vine ripe red tomatoes. This year, I am having to pull every trick I know to try to get them to ripen in a short time. So far, this is starting to work, but I wonder if a) I will have a lot of green tomatoes that while I can ripen them over time inside – they just don’t taste the same or b) I am going to get one massive crop of tomato’s that I will have to ingest in three days?
What does this all have to do with the price of butter in china? Since dads was sick and now with his passing, I have to get back to the holy trinity of food-based controlled environments we are doing. Plants, mushrooms, and charcuterie and cured meats. Initially, we were just doing plants, but the events of people/places/circumstances have had us broaden into the three areas. There is a fourth, but that is dealing with humans and is under a completely different banner with augment.
Right now, a great deal of time is being spent into figuring out the minimal, yet, comfortable space for what a human need to live and how to grow and support their food supply around them. This all started with the orphans, and instead of institutional size schools, it was the idea to make widow or child-headed households that actually worked to best bring the human element into the growth of not only the plants but the people. I still remember when an old girlfriend asked, “can you build a kitchen for some orphans?” and I looked at the photo and said, “They need more than a kitchen. They need everything.”
That was the start of a brainstorm that lasted three weeks, that has moved, morphed, and evolved into where we are where the solutions are for developed and developing/3rd world nations. It is a bit odd in that while I was born and taught capitalism and a sort of winner take all was right, as I aged, I realized it wasn’t all that good for the long-term health and growth of humanity.
Today I look at china and the united states and how the new technologies are being deployed and what the data mining and algorithms are doing and looking for, and it seems to be very similar in usage on each country’s citizens. It is just that you have to very different ideologies masking what is going on at the foundational level. What Is going on at the top levels is about control, lust for power, and a hefty dose of ego thrown in for good measure
So today, I get to work on the tweener steps that came out with each keyframe in the controlled environment processes while I was driving down the road and trying to spell out what I was thinking in handwriting that I would understand. It makes a great deal of sense with a market that probably as enough going on to never let me get bored with it. Perhaps that is why we added the human component to it all?
I was listening to a few of mom’s friends talking about their doctor visits and how the doctors were happy; their numbers were all in check with sugar, blood pressure, and heart functions. I asked if perhaps they didn’t want to start exercising?
“that is what the doctors said. The medicine is what is keeping your numbers in check, if you exercised, you could probably get rid of them!”
It is a mystery that dumbfounds me. I was in the local diner on Saturday scanning the room and thinking, “My God, how did this country get so large and out of shape? Look at them all taking their pills?”
At least now, I have a path where we can do our part with tools and ideas, and the people can make a choice whether they want to help improve themselves.
Off to work, I go…the walls will be full in a few hours of sketch’s, stickies, and notes. While I can do this on a computer, it always seems to be lacking in the first steps. I don’t’ really know why? Perhaps it is the hand-drawn look and/or retention of writing versus a few keystrokes?
