I sat at a traffic light this morning and watched people driving like lunatics, many on their cell phones, in a giant hurry to get somewhere fast. I wondered, “what is the big hurry?” It turns out that perhaps people were running late to get to work and they were all racing to get to the local donut shop that already had a line winding around the building for drive-through donut service.
Conveniences, much like a tool or service, allow us the choice to how we wish it to be used in society. Be it for good or not so great purpose. I did a quick survey of body mass index on each of the drivers and cars pulling in the line and thought, “how is this much different than a junkie looking for a fix? when did sugar and donuts become a habit?”
I am not here to judge, as food is probably my big vice. I love cooking, the variety of cuisines all over the planet, except Slavic, which has odd childhood memories of holidays involving motion sickness, vomiting, and having to eat “homemade” cured meats that were made by folks with no experience or taste buds.
Forgive the digression. There was an interesting https://nypost.com/2019/01/13/this-is-why-most-americans-dont-exercise-more/ about the reasons people don’t exercise. If you listen to people chat and hear, “I am too busy,” or “I don’t have any time.” yet, that is not necessarily true; instead, they make a choice not to make time.
It is like the last two nights, I really did not want to go to a gym, yet, I stopped and did the hardest two days of my bodyweight training regime. I know I have to make it a habit simply, much like some folks might want to make a pattern of driving beyond the donut store each day?
I guess it is a telling side of our country. We have created a world where we have so many choices, we consume so many resources, and we are being trapped and consumed in unintended consequences of bad habits. We are all works in progress, yet, I don’t see more time being spent doing; instead, people watching and consuming.
When did the country really become, or taught that taking some pill, medicine, or magic pill would be the key to health and happiness? No need to do anything? Huh? What?
I read the listed benefits of exercise….more energy, more motivated, happiear, more focused, less stressed, less likely to fall ill, less tired, more successful, more outgoing…
So why does the donut shop supercede exercise?
It is easier? simpler? short term sugar fix?
