I used to work in live entertainment. The purpose of it was to give people an outlet or escape from the norm of life and allow them to have an experience that elevate, dazzle, lift ones emotions, tell a story, or allow cultures from far away to make a visit to their spot on the planet. Then I was allowed to go into pure R&D for taking technologies and figuring out ways to manipulate human emotion to allow for a more dramatic shift, or create new worlds for people to experience.
it really was an amazing time in my life, yet, the more I got into the technologies and the limited scope of manipulation, I knew in my heart, all of this would probably be one day used for purposes where selfishness and greed in society would want to control it.
one day I feared that people would be living and merrily walking along spouting things like, “I am free! isn’t freedom great!” and they would have no idea it was simply an illusion and their lives were carefully controlled by whoever had the power at the moment
I wonder if Orwelle was going to be right? Will Ray Bradbury in Fahrenheit 451 right? or would Pixar and the movie wall-e be right? Or will it be a bit of all? yesterday I thought back to when I got on the internet in the early 1990’s and was given a snapshot of the globe all actually looking at each other and thinking, “wow, this can really be a tool to allow information, cultures, ideas, and freedom to be shared and make the planet more democratic! “
Then I watched the interenet being chopped, gobbled, segregated, and censored into what I see today. Depending on which country on the planet you are in, you see whole lot of people tethered to their cell phones, just watching….typing 140 character texts….seemingly to be less aware and/or more selfish of their place in the overall society.
if you take a bit of time to analyze the behaviors of today’s algorithms and look at the future of computing and what the sensor networks and advanced artificial intelligence/machine learning…well…I fear what I am seeing in the USA with the entertainment and feel no pain, always be happy culture – is simply growing overseas as well and soon people will be living inside their own reality – yet probably be simply trapped into living in fiction while pretending to be in a non-fiction world.
I worry a bit of the non-fiction world. just look at the bs in American politics and the behavior or our leaders sucking up for face time on camera – all to keep sitting at the feed trough of power where I wonder is it really for the best of the people? or is it simply to hang on to the perks of power for themselves?
