I wish there was more training in religion about walking and being in the spirit. we can read all about it, talk about it, but what is this mysterious helper that most of the world’s religions believe exists?
I was working on my friend’s house demolition and broke for lunch and when I drove away, heard an odd noise and rumble. “is that a flat tire?”
turns out It was. the timing could not have been worse as I am on a dealing to get stuff over to Switzerland, the dumpsters that are in demand only for a week, and I have agreed to shoot photos for a comedian friend tonight. it is all tightly scheduled and really had no wiggle room for any deviation…oh yeah, I wanted to achieve a certain level of demolition in the house to keep on schedule
so…there was that flat tire and I was like, “oh man…” the work in patience and not getting angry is paying off, I was like, “ok god, what do you want me to learn today?”
I pulled the car into the garage, retrained myself to use a jack and such – put on the spare and headed to the garage where I bought the tires. there I was met by a young man that really didn’t care to be there doing his job, or he a student just babysitting the front desk? he didn’t appear or care to have the size of tires I needed (I think it was a tire shop)– so I asked, “where is the nearest competitor?”
I walk in, explain the situation of the time…the manager goes out back, returns to say, “yeah, we have the tire, is It ok if you pick up at 5pm?”
my day is now half shot, I have to get ready for the photo shoot, I need a freight forwarder for the stuff for Switzerland and I resign myself and said, “I will be over in that Wendy’s over there, drowning my sorrows in a cheeseburger and a frosty.”
I walk in, order, and behind me, I see four biker jackets that are only worn by long-distance trekkers. and I notice the “artic to Antarctica” patch’s and say hello.
the next hour, I shared lunch with four fascinating people from India who also enjoy traveling the world and seeing the planet. i have traveled a lot, but these folks have seen most or will see all of the world. this adventure is from the arctic circle to Antarctica. it was at that moment, I realized if I planned for this meeting to happen, and even if God said, “meet four strangers in a Wendy’s at 3:30 pm for an unknown reason” I would have said, “sorry God, I am too busy. Look at this full to-do list!” would you have gone if you were given such a message?
instead, the creator of all simply arranged events so we simply happened to be at the same place at the same time, probably because he know is have a hearing issue, among others.
“I wanted you to meet these people and do it in a way that would get your attention and you would realize because of who you are, I needed to orchestrate the strangest way for you to realize that something in the spirit has to happen.”
I guess that is how I learn to walk in the spirit. I should clarify, “I seek and try to.” the few on the planet I have met that are there – all seem to be monks who have had to pay a high price in giving up what we take for granted with the world and pleasures to receive something far greater than most of us can’t see.
I almost went with these folks….I almost just left with them. but I don’t think the priest whose house I am demolishing, or the Swiss folks would be amused.
but there is always death valley national park…perhaps we will all meet up there again and they will teach me how to ride a motorcycle? I will show them death valley.
the time was much too short with them – but they touched me and I hope in the future they touch my heart many times again. if this was the only meeting – it was a great gift to have met them.
