I had to interrupt my normal morning routine and go pick up a massive tree limb that crashed to the ground last night while I was eating dinner. it was fun to watch it fall from a safe distance, yet, I could see how one instantly would become a widow if one was underneath it at that time. it was impressive, but not as cool as the trees I had to fell in Colorado to make that driveway a few years ago that had switchbacks going up a mountain. my reward each morning lugging up equipment was making a cup of coffee on the rocks while the sun rose over the peak across the valley.
the screaming hawk comes into play as they have a distinct screech they make. as I was working away clearing the tree, I could hear one screeching away and I was wondering, “is he hunting? in trouble? or just letting the world know he somehow got his breakfast of a critter and is simply saying how good it is?” I never saw the hawk who was camouflaged by the dark green forest…I only hear him. what an amazing sound of nature.
the new boobs and narcissism on steroids…well, that came from my Instagram research where I see a good idea simply being piled on with people pushing content and further having people lose touch with reality in the digital world. call me a purist…post a picture that in a perfect world no on manipulates, place a few hashtags about it and a little caption and share with the world. this is NOT how the idea actually works, but hey, I can dream no?
so this morning under some topic headings, one called, “style” I click and see what appears to be an operating room with a girl sitting on that bed with a duckface. what is a duckface? it is an annoying facial pose that I guess people think is cool? sort of like writers in their thirties thinking you need to put f*ck in every headline, and/or people literally posting a photo of themselves each day. when I type that, I remember the quote, “people take photos of that which they are most afraid to forget.”
there are a lot of people terrified to lose themselves, or is it let go of their, “stuff.”
If I were a betting man, I would wager it would be the later. I really don’t know what is going on with me in the past three years as I have spent a lot of time working inward, and I really can’t see or notice a change, yet, the way I see myself and the world sure has.
what do I notice different? well, I have to admit, I clicked on the photo of the young duckface lady in my “style” section and there was a plastic surgeon smiling away, she was duckface and I am guessing she might be in her late 20 and she was proudly announcing she is getting her second boob job with dr. “I forget his name, but since she is posting him, I guess she is getting a discount and/or free and he is getting more boobs to do a job on. too bad it was not mental and only physical?”
I digress, so like a bad car wreck, I click on her profile and see she reminds me of someone living in Los Angeles where image and brand supersede reality of life…but her photos expound a life where either she has a crew of folks behind her doing the work, a very wealthy husband, or she like living life to the max (aka – credit cards) her blog is about a lot of what is probably wrong with the united states.
I am sure she probably has loads of people following her around for reasons I will never understand that think, “she has a great life!”
when I look at it, I go, “photoshop, digital unreality, and I would love a cup of coffee to have an actual conversation and pray this person is doing an act, like on a stage, and is not really like the brand and person they are saying they are.” I mean one quote, “I love traveling to Japan and don’t really know what I am doing but I sort of have a business there now with peeps.” (forgive my paraphrase…that is what I remember. a better way to read it
“I am trying to get all of you to fund my dreams because either I am really shrewd and have no problems using OPM, or I need your help to fund my new boob lifestyle….but I went to Japan a few times, and I mentioned we can take this USA brand bullshit idea and export it to the Ginza where lots of young Japanese women can partake and pay and make my brand bigger!”
folks, I am not trying to rain on anyone’s parade, but what is lacking in all of the digital worlds is some reality and substance that is deeper than one coat of tan bronze spray. I do get that in the united states we tend to have a dream and then figure out the path to get there. what drives me crazy about Europe and Switzerland is that by the time you write out your dream, you have simply locked yourself into something that really can’t change. it is not a bad thing, provided you are on the right path. if you are on the wrong one…you will simply get and be lost.
it is like the term “ethical posturing” that someone taught me in Santa Fe. I did laugh heartily as we were making the prototype spaces for closed environment ag. I was like, “ethical what?”
“ethical posturing – you see around here, there are a lot of wealthy folks, with lots of degrees, who all talk about what society needs to do to improve, yet, they themselves don’t do much more than wear a t-shirt with a slogan on it and tell everyone how they support some cause(s)”
it is like reading the ban on drinking straws. I get it the concept and idea. I think it is great. yet, I see all the press about “we banned plastic straws” and anyone that has studied the environment knows that a simple, “hey, can we stop consuming and wasting so much?” would be a better and systemic solution.
“but that would hurt our economy”
“we are sucking up 1.7 times what the planet can produce for our western lifestyle at a global level. in the USA we consume 25% of that for a population that is only 5%....we don’t need to dilute our lifestyle, we need to distill it for a higher quality – of which – we will probably useless, but demand better quality”
a more common response to that I hear is, “that is crazy talk…how will I continue making money doing nothing by watching the stock market?”
“so you think legalized gambling where the market cap has superseded P/E ratio is ok?”
“what is P/E ratio?”
“I rest my case” is my normal reply. I do explain what the ratio means, present the case of robotic trading, and the various manipulations on the markets around the globe post-2007 with regards to sound business practices.
I will close with my take on the outlawing of drinking straws by asking the folks passing the legislation, “what is your next step?”
in Seattle, there is a giant runoff of drugs and medicine that go with the trash into the sea. it is changing the natural balance of how the ocean works. the trash issue is more common in other places and my friend told me about sailing through the trash island in the Pacific. the united states produced a ration of 109 for trash, the next biggest competitor is the EU at 64, and from there, a drastic drop in what is wasted and thrown away.
maybe it is with the agrowspace work in the 3rd world…we had to get very resourceful in what you use…off the shelf local things – it has blended the world of indigenous wisdom with modern technology, and it is in the 3rd world where you are seeing the common sense designs and solutions to the most pressing issues for the planet.
while it is great to use cutting and bleeding edge research to make new technologies and tools for problems, I think bill gates and his foundation have it right in many respects in realizing the biggest issue for humanity will be something affecting people and health…like clean water, various mutated common virus and flu…
banning a plastic straw sound cool, it is symbolic, but if I see some government advertising campaign with slick imagery and editing being broadcasting at a cost of several million in a campaign budget, I will ask the question, much like I will write to the lady with her second boob job before age 30…”why do you do what you do? who is paying for it? have you ever considered taking 90 days and going away – far from the gerbil mill of your known reality and being still inside yourself?”
maybe I finally realized change really does only come inside yourself. that is my ramble for the morning, post tree limb, hawk, new boobs, and plastic straw thoughts…now…I go model what is more of a permanent agrowspace idea…that we can put around the guts of the system for food security in areas where the weather is causing problems. have a great day.
