anyone else getting tired of seeing folks on the internet pushing for followers and showing amazing travel and vacation images that just don’t really seem all that real, appear a bit faux, and are heavily modified and edited seeming to live some life that is possible if you were born with a very large trust fund? yet, the number of people trying it seems to be very large even though the reality of the people with such a large trust fund – is very small, and they tend not to advertise their lives?
when you are young and living in a capitalistic consumer society, I wonder if you are aware of how much influence is being pushed in your direction either from a conscious or subconscious level? or does the pathways seem to be “this is normal” and if you don’t move around the planet much, you are unable to differentiate that there are more and different ways and perspectives to seeing life? it is like a few months ago I was driving across the USA and I kept switching the stations in every city to see if I could find something different and unique, and what I found was that for the most part…media is owned by a very few, and the “programming” is pretty much the same all across the country.
it wasn’t like this, not very long ago.
if you also want a reason why I am really not on social media, it is because while I think the idea is great, I really don’t see the depth of any of it. I like deeper conversations than hitting a like button or pushing an emoticon as a response. that is like going to church, stepping inside the front door and turning around and walking out and saying you had an intimate moment with God. I love that you have so much access to data and information, yet, there is a great lacking of depth to it all – of which, the groundwork is now in place for a few to control the pipeline and access for a few that will pay a lot for it – the rest are a bit out of luck.
the world wide web will simply be a globe chopped up and the data manipulated via where you are on the planet.
so what happened? the model was a few big companies in the USA paid a lot of money to control the information and data, then along came the internet that allowed everyone the ability to make and publish information, and the world became a bit granular and heavily unedited – so a few companies gobbled up all the little companies to survive. one area devastated with news and reality has been the plight of the newspaper. today, on the corporate scale you have a few giant companies controlling the gates for all the data and lots of people trying to compete for a tiny fraction of the leftover piece of the pie.
what really has me wanting to check out of all media is the trend of stupidity I see about people on Instagram asking for free flights, vacations, and stuff. I am not here to slap back on any of the folks who were smart enough to generate all the trips, vacations, and rooms and stuff they were able to negotiate. but if you have traveled around the planet and you see a disconnect between the people in the image and the reality of the brand, well, you have me dropping a few brands from my life.
I do understand the media marketplace has changed the way we shop and do things. for me, It has taught me to go with simplistic minimalism where our market is no longer the masses, but a section inside the mass that really wants reality, not some fantasy of digital manipulation.
maybe that is where I am heading, If you know how to manipulate all the audio, color, and various other frequencies to change something, you one day get to a place where you want reality – out of the noise and stream of media.
I am not sure if your brain will simply develop a protective filter and shut down with the nonsense that is being strewn in the media and all the various ways a few companies are pushing a message and “programming,” or if you simply unplug and walk along and look around at the world of people staring into screens all day – oblivious of the human next to them.
in the early 90’s, I rarely slept, as the internet was an idea I dreamed of. you have access to the globe and people all around it…I don’t think I appreciated the idea of the world wide web until about 10 years ago when I saw it really getting carved up and not being used for a democratic ideology. today It is a more about commodification reality.
while I am ok with the need to make a profit, I am no longer ok with the idea that reality can be bent/augmented/virtualized to space where people don’t ask, “can any human have created this?” and think they have. what is coming soon to the planet is a choice to use technology for ways can do amazing good for the people and the planet, yet, most all the technology will probably be used in a fear or security-based idea where the robots will be used, much like governments and companies use contractors around the planet to distance themselves from the reality of what they really want to accomplish and think it will absolve them of their part in the process.
“we didn’t know what was going on, they made us sign an NDA, we had no idea where all that money was going from our coffers!”
the same might be said about the “influencer” folks on social media. I can only tell that I am one person that will walk away from the brand that peddles the junkets usually reserved for politicians and gives them to anyone.
one person will not make much of a difference to these brands. but what happens to the brands if a few people wake up and ask, “why not give us better service for less than the cost of all these faux freebies?”
interesting times….thankfully life is dynamic and there is one guarantee that awaits all of us to make everyone perhaps think…do I want reality here? or manipulation?
it is like that old game we played with a flower as kids, a bit of fairy tale…”she loves me, she loves me not..”
