If you were to see me on the street, I wonder what you would think of me. I gave up the custom suits and flashy ties years ago. It was a stage where I thought success was about things and what you looked like. I remember going to a meeting with the sr. vps and treasurers of a large organization in shorts and a golf shirt, a vp was upset at my dress when the treasurer said, “we don’t pay him for what he looks like, we pay him for his ideas.”
I will admit, I was in a fortunate position in that it only took me about 20 years of studying anything and everything to get the skill sets where I knew enough about a lot to be able to cross over or cross-pollinate problem-solving. This is not a knock against the trend for specialization and the need for a laser beam focus on one tiny issue or problem. But instead, I am not running into many generalists or creative thinkers that can cross over into various disciplines as much anymore.
It all has me wonder about what will happen if some calamity comes into the systems we have. Are we headed on a path, or will get to a place with advanced artificial intelligence where the systems will provide so much information and data that we no longer have to really think or learn, and do? I know it sounds strange, but I have a lot of super-genius friends that can’t really seem to tie their shoes.
I don’t know where or why my path is the way it is. Perhaps I had to walk out all the sensory manipulation with technology in entertainment, to all the work we are prototyping in controlled environments with agriculture and humans to come to a place where you step back and see the incredible beauty in design of nature and millions of years versus what humans have come up within a hundred.
One will survive over time and adapt, I fear humans won’t. Not because we cannot adapt and change, but perhaps we will forget and become too lazy too? We live in exciting times. What I hope is humanity might wise up a bit, and instead of consuming ourselves, we might learn to get along with each other.
but that is usually my dream for Christmas. “peace on earth.” what a nice idea, no?
