I was sitting for my post-church treat of a decent cup of coffee when a man walked up with a funny t-shirt with Abraham Lincoln on it. what can say, I have a bunch of merch I want to produce but the t-shirt guy here ended up screwing his partner and myself. it was one of those, “walk away, let it go” type deals in life where I pray the guy gets back on his feet and stabilized his life. I digress…
so, I am sitting there, and had to giggle at the satire and cleverness of the t-shirt design. then I noticed the guy had a beard almost like Lincoln, but it was pepper gray. we said hello and then I asked, “are you from Canada or France?” as I detected an older root in the accent he spoke with.
“I am French, I came from Lyon.”
“really nice city, I enjoyed the time there.”
I am not sure what or how it happened, but Poki is big into agriculture and is really working to make the planet and its soil better. I heard the tale of what he was doing in Santa fe, how the politicians, people, and human greed all tend to take an idea that is good for people and squish it back into the land of “it’s always been done this way. We don't have a rule for that idea, so you can't-do it!"
then he asked, “what are you doing here?”
so, I explained about the controlled environment meets greenhouse hybrids, rain collection and processing and the new aeroponics systems and controllers we are testing and building with the mushroom farm.
he hands me his card and invites me to a potluck talk/dinner at a ranch near here (if I get the address) where I was blown away by the diversity of people that might be there. from Harvard educated ethnobotanists, to some of the folks that built and worked on the biosphere 2. while I was booked up for that time, I am going, “this is what makes the town cool…you have some really brilliant and interesting people that actually do things…versus just talk about it.”
I have to clarify, I am not used to being around people that just talk about stuff and don’t try to build it. I guess it comes from all the various road crews. you had a team of folks that could all do several skills outside of the one they specialized in very well. if someone had an idea…it was done.
I do miss that part of the road life – someone had an idea, or you found (particularly in Japan) old Vespa scooters being thrown out that simply had a clogged fuel line and while you were in the country…a bit of a small maker space of fun, practical jokes and actual real new ideas transpired.
as for poki – it was a typical way where someone was plopped into my life, that I have to pay attention to – as like the folks here with the mushroom farm, I know I was to help them – even if they have no business experience. it has been frustrating at times, but it has been some good lessons. The main one being, if you want to simply do profit, it is easy – you almost don’t have to be human. if you want an organization to be about people – it is easy – just talk and don’t really do much.
I want to bring both together. I have seen it in other parts of the world and in a few spots inside the united states.
“there is enough for everyone. it is just humans have created a slightly greedy and unequal distribution system.”
I am looking forward to seeing and learning more about wherever this path leads. it is indeed ironic about the shirt as I was searching for a company that supplies a special rubber I need and found a product that might work for what I want to do with prototypes and merch too.
the moral of the story is a) you can plan and visualize what “you” want in life on this earth and go and get/achieve/gain it. it will lead you to a space where your “self” can easily get filled. b) you can also sit and wait to be guided by something and walk out your purpose on this planet and gain amazing riches with letting go of your “self” and fighting to learn to walk “selflessly”
the latter is very difficult if you have mastered the first way. but when you do let go of your “self” an amazing new world opens up – that few would understand the logic and/or lack of it with walking about on this planet and helping.
