I have been trying to book a ticket for someone to come over to the states from Switzerland. what is odd is that this particular sister company of Swiss and Lufthansa is more of a charter flight group that operates like a normal air carrier. they also have a direct flight from Zurich to the destination that will operate as a staging area. you would think it would be simple…get online, click a few buttons…voila…ticket, and reservation. for whatever reason, it has not gone anything like this, with the exception of me watching the dynamic pricing algorithms working all too well and the “today's prices are now 58% higher in just two weeks!” it would be fine, but the trip isn’t’ for a few months.
what I watched last night was the best video I have ever seen on the element of chaos theory and complexity to describe how these systems work and the beauty of biological systems using the constraints of systems for working order and not anarchy of data. as I typed another email, after another phone call to the s African based call center (what is funnier is Swiss's call center is in Fiji) I thought, “my god, this is a simple ticket request, what will happen if people with not so nice thoughts or a moral compass decide to control and acquire the world? “
that is when I thought about the power of the giant tech companies today and the ignorance of many people pushing data into these systems with “social” media and the vision of Orwell’s 1984 resonating in my brain at the same time.
do I appreciate what computer technologies allow me to do? yes. do I think computers can be a great too? yes. do I see how amazing the future can be with using such tools to allow for the creation of a better planet? yes. do I see human beings using them wisely all the time? no…I can’t say I do.
what I envision is as technology gets less and less expensive…what is “possible” for one human to do with robotics and Advanced AI will be amazing. the part that holds me back from thinking this will all be great and wonderful is the human being themselve's. we will be the weakest link in the chain soon – particularly when quantum computing and whatever comes after that become a reality.
to book this ticket, I have talked to three delightfully accented s. African call center employees, to book a ticket on a charter company owned by two bigger major carriers (Swiss and Lufthansa) who have incredible service and quality levels versus the American carriers that resemble more of cattle cars, but with inexpensive pricing.
I guess my brain gets confused as I am caught in some loop to get a ticket, that will require a human being who knows the in’s and outs of the system to get a solution that the passenger thinks is fair based on two weeks of the airlines web snafu’s and whatever issues their technology is having.
I am trying to remember the term…” nonlinearity within a construct?” but it is what can and will happen to make 100% accurate prediction impossible for the human. with quantum computers, it might get a more accurate ability to model or simulate – but there is no way to model an infinite number of variables in real time.
so, I just sit here – and while man is a great tool maker – he will have to first go inside himself to help cure the flaws we all have as people…human beings. I disagree that the human condition can’t be overcome and maybe I am crazy – I think humans can do a whole lot better than we are, and instead of figuring out how to get off the planet…. why not try to make a great planet for all of the humanity?
the irony…I better get busy to get some prototypes made for the Santa Fe institutes interplanetary shows in October. who knew that taking online mooc's years ago would ever have me in Santa Fe – and trying to get a clue what the minds on the hill are working on.
