I have been trying to come up with a way to explain to some folks that want some technology gizmos created to act as a way to meditate and change themselves. I do enjoy technologies and I have used and tested many of them on myself with the idea of breaking through to another plane beyond our human senses. while I read about it in research papers and put on a wide variety of gizmos to change brains waves, feedback, sensory deprivation…it wasn’t until I met an actual human that spent years in a desert that I realized why the thing I was looking for would never be found in a machines or programming of humans.
the path he sent me on, seemed too simplistic, really basic, and was devoid of fancy bells, whistles, and stuff. it seemed too simple.
what I quickly learned was how hard and difficult that path he put me on was and what I really was probably looking for in my heart and soul is really not something you can master for yourself.” the reality is you need some help to guide you along the path, which in essence will take you every day of your life that you are on this earth to keep trying to reach for that space.
in our modern world. people either get too tied up in life’s obligations, they chase the dream of happiness with “one day if I get…” or “if only I had this. I would be happy.” or most probably, people just don’t want to put in the time, sacrifice that time to do some serious work on themselves, and instead enjoy all the fun stuff the world offers for entertainment and the message of “you deserve to be happy all the time!”
yesterday I went back up into the woods and while the one deer is all butchered and ready to be processed into the various products that will be eaten. I sat for a few hours at sunset, in the woods, not moving and praying away…and then the answer that has eluded me to the “why” question for the silicon valley or urban dwellers who will pay for time thinking that virtual or augmented reality rooms will get them to that space of inner peace and silence.
to my right, I had a flock of wild turkeys about 20 yards away feeding. behind me was a tiny young deer just grazing away, the squirrel, chipmunks, and birds were all just hanging out and inside the forest, I started to see the Fibonacci sequences in the ferns, trees, leaves and all around me. that's when I stopped praying and just got silence to “be” in the moment of the sun setting upon this scene in nature.
it was then I realized, that even with quantum computing…I don’t know if 99.99% virtual and or augmented simulation is possible? that is what is needed for the meditative and healing spaces to really work. it isn’t the 20% entertainment budget where you simply do something simple to create the illusion of something happening in the human emotional spectrum. it is beyond the 99% military/medical spectrum where the reality is you need far more sensitive and sophisticated equipment than entertainment (not to say the entertainment stuff is inexpensive) all to create this real simulation/alteration. not a good fake or augmentation.
while I believe one day there will be some sort of a neuro implant into the actual human brain or a sort of secondary man-made brain that is a tool to enhance or go with our own human brains. I will be dead before that age/day comes. I am happy about that in that the more I studied virtual / augmented / human senses – the more I came to realize if you really want to change something – you simply need to sit with yourself in silence and learn to shut off all the other noise.
when I asked some psychologists and psychiatrists about change…even physical therapists and doctors…” how many people want to grow and change” none could give me even ballpark numbers, so I am simply inserting the bell curve of adaptation to the models we are working on. but the reality is change like this is not always blissful and fun. many times it is difficult work and painful. like exercise and habits –over time they change, but it is not usually at a rapid pace and so many drops out or quit in thinking any change is happening.
for this. Perhaps the augmented/virtual spaces are a tool to unlock a step for another. they also can just be like I see some folks in denominations of churches…they go for the emotional high and don’t realize there is a level beyond human senses yet.
with all the buzz of virtual reality, I have to admit from 1992-2004, all of this was a part of me trying to create ways for people to escape with entertainment coolness. little did I know that the actual path that worked for me was having me let go of all the technology.
today. We have two groups asking “can you make this technology work beyond that fun entertainment way?”
yes,…we can! :o)
