As I mentioned yesterday, I drive engineers nuts and I don’t mean tot do it intentionally. Many engineers think and solve problems in a linear fashion. I see solutions to problems in spatial thinking. In between the two ways, there is a great deal of room for misunderstanding, friction and it is sort of like the Mrs. she has a way of thinking that she grew up with, has lived that is very different than mine. So you get these moments of friction not much about anything that can cause heat, all to get everyone on the same page. Yesterday was such a day – not with the Mrs. but with the engineers.
I must have looked a bit comical as we were firing notes back and forth over 8 times zones and someone asked the question about, “what are you doing?” I explained the things we are working on and once again, they understood it all because some actor pissed on a plant in a recent movie in outer space (aka-sound stage)
When I found the interest in the early 90’s, I thought I was had died and gone to heaven in that I could find other nerds and geeks on the planet. Now the net has matured a little bit and I really could care less if I am on it. What is happening now is just as exciting in the coming robotic and machine age. The ability to for one human to do and/or control a lot of things in a system is amazing. I embrace all this technology, yet, I fear what man will do with it, as I don’t see man spending a great deal of time inside himself to alter and change that which isn’t’ a great thing – anger, pride, selfishness, ego…instead, the time is spent to crate more things to get more stuff.
The same is true in agriculture. You have a few humungous companies that are rewriting policy and rules because they have the power and money to do so. If you are a biologist or a geneticist you are living in a time that really is amazing with what is possible. If you are a consumer in the developed world, you walk into a grocery store and simply get confused and/or overwhelmed that in one aisle of the store, you have so many choices to wipe your buttocks with toilet paper. Do we really need that many choices?
But as we get to our food supply you see the disparity in the world only if you travel or walk along it. I could tell you about it, you can read about it, have knowledge about it – but the reality is that the food system is really skewed, and in an unhealthy balance for global security.
This is why I don’t care if one is doing vertical, horizontal or any other farming. They all have their place on the planet what amazes me is how little common sense I am seeing in the way the markets are being pushed. The biggest criticism I have of the farm is that the social structure that used to hold communities together usually came from religion or the farms. In developing countries with small shareholder farms, you have 10’s of thousands of these small groups. In the USA…the land of scale or die. A small farm might be 5,000 head of cattle. In Switzerland a normal dairy farmer might have 20 and be subsidized 50-60 percent.
Somewhere in the middle of all these technologies and ways of life, there is a balance. I don’t know why more don’t appear to see it, instead, like the “innovation” center I felt so bad walking out of in Denver, they had all the tools, but they are too busy trying to reinvent the wheel to use them…so it is a bit like going into a clean an pretty museum to look at art. “How pretty!”
It is about common sense, which traditionally had served farmers well through history. At the end of our geekie talk yesterday, the people were impressed and/or fascinated with the future of farms. That is when I mentioned, “we aren’t really ding anything new. We just have tools that allow us to see and monitor better…. there were the ancient hanging gardens of Babylon thousands of years ago, yet today, I have a whole lot of people thinking vertical farming is “new.”
That is my ramble for the morning, I have to get some coffees and take them back to the folks in the shop next door and we figure out how to design some merchandise...because you need to look hip and cool while working on hip and cool stuff!
Sadly, that is how a lot of the world works today. Is it profit vs. perceived valuation, or is it reality vs. awareness of an idea?
The older I get, the more I want reality, truth, minimal bus. I think the world is going the other way, and doesn’t’ even realize it?
As for typos and grammar. Yes, this post was done sans reading glasses, so i have no clue how atrocious it is.
