It amazes me at the fear of silence and being alone that I see in the world. I understand the fear and can remember back when I would want to live in the world full of noise, excitement and activity – yet, over time, meditation and prayer, I realized the simplicity of silence was something that made life easier. If you had a few moments of that silence in your day, it made whatever life threw at you bearable.
Thinking back to a few conversations, and being hyper observant to the re-entry to the United States, I can understand why there is so much fear and insecurity in the country. I am sure that last comment will raise the ire of many Americans, but what else can I say. When I discuss and hear the feelings about terrorism, elections and every other issue that the average person is bombarded with by media, it amazes me that more people haven’t jumped off tall buildings with the gloom and doom of media reporting.
Even some people close to me, had me asking, “are you serious?” when they made a comment about someone coming in from another land who was Muslim.
I had to seriously step back and ask them, “Where did you get this idea or feeling from about the person or situations?”
As I listened to the answer, I realized the media in the stats has done a phenomenal job hiding facts and realities from people, and instead burying the issues and seeming to have a perpetual schoolyard fight in the news with people bullying each other.
I said, “I will pull up the statistics, but what you are worried about is about 30 people a year, and granted, terrorism works because you don’t have to do much and you terrify a great group of people…but you have much higher chance of any other type of violence.’
“But we heard these young people would be used…”
“How many of them were used? 10, 20, 30?” (now, go click on the aforementioned graph at the reality of terrorism vs. our own homegrown tendency for violence and look at the facts)
I think I just wrote myself into the answers to what was a few hour conversation with a man last night…. neither of us could pinpoint where all the people bypass facts with the media and believe the data from their friends “trusted and accurate” (dripping sarcasm) news feed source, called face book.
The human mind is amazing what it thinks and believes. Perhaps this is where I can understand the chasm between science and spirituality best. But what I do not and really am having a hard time understanding is why the average American really is believing the bullshit, seeming devoid of many facts, that has the “land of the free and home of the brave,” being more of “land of the scared and home of the afraid.”
The system inside the leadership of this country is broken. That is the issue. It is not what all the name calling and bullying is about. The real issue is America has lost it’s footing for the moment.
To change that, all it has to do is stop for a bit, look at the facts and go…”oh wow, why are we believing the bullshit? Lets just get rid of that, sit in the silence for a bit and come up with an actual plan to make America great again…not the democratic, not the republican, but the country itself.
If the country did that, it really would be great again in a short time, and we would not have to keep telling ourselves how wonderful we are, when we really aren’t
Facts vs. feelings. Don’t be afraid of the silence.
