I am happy that early in life I was forced to exercise, it think it was when I got to college, it was the first time I realized everyone was a good athlete, and to compete, you either improved yourself to get better, or you were purged from the system.
To each of my coaches along the path, from Mr. Wallach, through to Coach Kaiser at the very end…I am grateful for how each tried to make me a bit better. The irony is the only coach that actually understood how to get the most out of me was coach Kaiser. He reminded me more of a California surfer dude than a linebacker coach.
It is ironic, I went from probably the most knowledgeable coach in the game of football I ever met. Joe Sarra – who ended up coaching at Linebacker University, Penn state. He had this playbook that must have been a few hundred pages with every known defense and everyone’s responsibility. You had to memorize this.
Coach Kaiser, he cut most of the book out, as he realized athletically, our core was better at just playing the game with athletic prowess, than brains. As I type that, it makes us sound a bit like simplistic Neanderthals, we weren’t. But there was no need to implement a finesse system with the mindset and physical talents our little group of linebackers had. He just let us play the game, he didn’t try to make us into little robots.
What I learned there was you have to work every day to improve, for years. I am thankful for these lessons, as it has served me well in the process of inventing. You fail 100 times every morning in brainstorm. To the world it looks like failure, to the other creative’s, it is simply one step closer to an idea that will work.
What I am noticing inside the USA, is how little time and space is given to improving our inner lives. To me, that has been the most difficult of challenges, to try to change a weakness into a normal level, or even strength. What I am seeing is American society finds strength, and we allow everyone to simply exploit that, while forgetting about the long-term damage of neglecting our weaknesses.
A good example was lunch yesterday, we were seated next to a woman who was a professor who talked so much about nothing, that inside my mind, I wondered if I had a roll of duct tape handy, would I have gotten up and taped her mouth and said, “ma’am, I don’t know what you are teaching these kids, but the real world is very different than your academic lifestyle.”
Forgive me if that sounds harsh, but it was a very odd lunch where you saw the spectrum of America, great strength and great weaknesses all happening at the same moment. One crying waitress, pissed off unbelievably self-important customers, amazing food that came out...i think we were for lunch and it arrived at dinner? and a whole lot of noise about nothing. the guy using the weed blower thing under the deck gave the entire experience a very special and bewildering appeal.
I think I write this blog because few people will ever read it, and truth be told, who really cares about another opinion anymore? We are a society of opinion givers and where few want to get dirty hands and build something anymore. It has given me another marketing path for Agrowbox 2 in presenting how we want the company’s culture to work in a world full of page clicks and instant gratification.
I love the idea…but I almost wonder if it would be a death sentence of sorts to implement it, as the words and ideas are a bit too truthful for the mass button click society to digest, much less even notice.
That is why you need times of silence in your life. Because if you don’t step out of the noise of the world, you will be sucked in and programmed by it.
Lots of work to do in a world that does a great job distracting focuses on the real issues. Mankind seems to invent fake issues to waste time about – all to ignore the root issue that if were weeded, would make for a much simpler and fun existence on this planet.
The world is also great at telling someone with a different idea or view why something won’t work more with fear based advise, than constructive criticism and facts.
In some respects, that is where our modern media has gone…. opinion news…social media simply has amplified the biased filled messages.
Screw this…off to the prototyping space. Constructive, no more destructive thinking…take ideas and make them reality.
The doorbell just rang, there was a young man asking me for bottles and cans, i had no idea what he meant, he was a boyscout, probably like my nephew, who made eagle scout, working on some badge and making money to go to an event next summer. I smiled, as his father was in the truck driving him and he had his little brother with him. It gave me a much needed shot of hope that America is going ot be ok, there are enough people doing more than taking selfies or collecting awards for doing nothing, but simply showing up.
I am not sure what the young mans story was with a delay in his application, but when he left, i said, “good luch, and remember, you will fail, fall down, get kicked in the teeth at time in life, just remember to get back up and keep trying.” It is the same advise for simple prayer, meditation, exercise and spending time each day inside yourself. It is the only thing you really can control, or have any control over in the world. If you don’t try to improve it each day….you will break down and wonder, “how did i get here?”
