I can still see the press getting into a fight as the camera panned back from the throng of media that was covering ex president Clinton's sexcapade ("i never had sexual...) events in the white house. The CNN crew said, “we have news that Kenneth star will walk from one building to the other, but not make any comments.”
Then the camera panned back to show about 200 journalists in a line jockying for position when I noticed three of them started to go all out and have an actual fight.
i thought, "this is what the media is doing because someone put a press release out announcing a man would be walking between two buildings - and not speaking to the press?"
That is the moment I turned off television in earnest. I was already immersed into the world of 24/7 live video feeds with other nerds and dorks around the planet from a few years earlier – all of us thinking, “this internet is a great thing…anything is possible. What shall we create and do?”
What i had become, was the terror for any television executive - a human that stopped watching, for a day, week, month...after three months...you are pretty much gone forever.
I did use to keep NASA geek streamrunning on my computer to get a view of multiple sunrises and sunsets over the planet, and there was a site called internet weather report that amused me – watching the entire planet wake, use bandwidth and then go to sleep
Fast forward 20 years and I really am ready to shut the Internet off. Why? Because the land of “new media” has done a great job of taking common sense and creating a world, that I doubt it intended to create – that being the one where it is easy for people of like minded ideas to find each other, yet, it builds walls for people of different views.
Just look at the behavior inside the USA today…. you have every race, creed, color, sexual orientation, religion and (insert whatever cause you believe in) acting rather brutish or like a bully to anyone that disagrees. The media is there promoting it all, with bias!
Pull back to the global view – and if you study and play with the algorithms and how the search engines manipulate the data down to the user level – I can see the train coming where the illusion of choice and people thinking they are free, or have freedom is a joke.
Why do I say this? Because I spent 25 years in the lab working on ideas to entertain and change human senses and emotions – it is really scary what one can do.
What I don’t see changing is that there is so much noise being created at the surface levels with people bickering, disagreeing, fighting and feeling disrespected by another group – that they all miss that the people that really have control of the data and pipeline – really don’t care – they are making too much money and refining the manipulation tools in algorithms for the next few generations of wearable and implantable devises that will soon be akin to implanting a very powerful mobile computer in your rectum to control, influence, and alter what the ethic of life is about.
Thankfully, I will be so old, that I doubt I remember my own name at this time, but I think I will be alive at this time.
But I tried to look at simple news feeds…. I lamented the death of the newspaper and print magazines….
All I got was shit; filled with every data analytics company auto playing videos, pop up ads and all the crap I shut off.
It made me yearn for the first time I got on the Internet and saw some government web page, ugly type, all text….
I could read that, get the data, and move on.
Today…the programmers want everyone to “watch” and make everyone a critic – oblivious to those in power that control the data pipelines – the pubic, blissfully unaware what is happening underneath the GUI interface…absently figuring out not ways to make humanity better – but sell more stuff.
The internet is an amazing thing – does some wondrous things – provides data and information – but I wish it had editors anymore – the land of selfies, mindless three bullet articles – and more photos and people talking. …About not much of anything
Who knows? Maybe my daily missives are similar – maybe I have a plank in my eye?
That cabin in the woods, with a satellite uplink/downlink is looking really nice these days. Call that my reality TV?
