What’s app...icq...skype..facebook...twitter.... too many messengers for me.
I think my first messenger program, for all I know, it was the first one on the web back in the early 1990’s was something called icq or irc? I think my membership number was 56 or 64,000 something. It seems funny today, but there wasn't many people on the internet in the early 1990's. If memory serves me, that first chat service was an Israeli company that sold the technology to AOL for about 300 million when it became popular.
My love hate with apps and messengers is that there are so many flavors and varieties, it is like those shopping cards the stores give you, that while I am sure they make inventory control better, you can also scan what someone is buying and get a pretty good idea what the family is up to
If you combined the grocery store card, drug store card and fitness membership card – you would easily figure out why much of the USA is in not so great shape.
Perhaps that is why I simply use someone else’s card in the lines. I think it started because they only way you could get a discount, was to use the card. I didn’t think that was terribly fair, so I try to find someone with a car full of junk food and go in front of them to confuse the computers…”warning…. fruits and vegetables were purchased by junk food family…. warning.”
Forgive the digression; I gave up my cell phone in the USA, as I don’t know when I will actually get back there. I have another cell phone that is an older model, as I don’t sign up for a plan, as I don’t know how long I will be here.
Usually I get blamed because is did not answer and in the world of apps.
“Why didn’t you answer?"
“Answer what? I didn’t get a message.”
“Yes you did? I sent it”
“Just because you sent it, doesn’t mean I get it.”
Today, as I sat learning my German words for the week, the phone mysteriously rang and buzzed. It is the first time I have heard the phone do this since????
Part of me has to laugh as 8 phone messages from my wife, 150 messages from the what’s app just showed up.
The first thing I see, is a photo of my mother in law in Brazil, who looks like she was on the loosing end of a bar fight. Broken nose bandage…
Of course the date was February 9. It is nice to see how the family communicates. My wife probably thinks I am an a**hole for not saying anything, I am going “I just saw an image of your mom and her new boxing career!”
So here it is a week later, I just typed in, “Mom, what happened? I just got 150 plus messages all at the same time.”
Then I called my father, who turned 80 today and sang him happy birthday first in english, then when i hung up – german.
Now I weep a bit. That all one can do when you miss them and they are several thousand miles away. Odd, this is what it felt like when they gave you a day off on the road on a “holiday.” You actually wished you had a show that day so that you wouldn’t have to think and remember some of the people you love are so far away
Such is life. tomorrow is a new day.
