What a wonderful ideal and concept to try to attain. I forget how many Christmas’s people would ask, ‘what do you want for Christmas an I would ask, “peace on earth, goodwill towards men.”
What is funny is that I was dead serious, but people felt I was being sarcastic or making a joke.
Fast forward to the nuclear annihilation news. The clock was moved much closer to what is perceived as doomsday by the scientist that somehow model, have an algorithm, read tea leaves, and or pull out tarot cards and psychics to come up with the analysis of when the ultimate act of stupidity between men will happen and one group will hit the red launch button, then another will do the same.
In the cold war there was a term “arms race” and “MAD- aka mutually assured destruction.” I never understood the logic of what was the Soviet Union and the United States thinking the ability to blow the smithereens out of the planet 30-50 times over each was a good thing. Even when someone explained the reason for the “arms race” in not letting the other side get too far ahead or behind or the opponent, as if a race – was to insure no one got really stupid and actually thought, “we can win the war because you can annihilate our opponent 10 more times than they can hurt us!”
“Excuse me, i am a bit confused, I they can annihilate us and the entire planet 30 times, what good is it for us to be being able to annihilate them and the entire planet 40 times?”
“Because we win!”
(Insert sound of crickets chirping for anyone possessing common sense) If you need a visual to understand the "logic" try this video clip:
SO yes, there is something coming. I call it the delay of post 2008 sub prime gambling and the global reshuffling of the house of cards that companies call financial reports that are filled with all sorts of tax breaks, subsidies and other things given to try to make what in ideal is a softer landing of a bad economy than a hard landing of a big crash in 2008.
Here we are several years later, and you have the “economic recovery” many politicians are speaking about and taking credit for what simply doesn’t seem right in my eyes. It appears there is another house of cards built because everyone is simply printing more money, interest rates are at negative numbers, and the one weakness of capitalism will once again show it’s face – it really only works if you are perpetually growing.
Capitalism used to have a way to correct itself in downturn times, but in the past recession, it appears that the complexity of financial interactions on a global scale have people not seeking safe harbor with a sound financial model – but rather, it is “pick the best of the worst economies” for the safe haven.
This year was the first year I forgot to ask for “peace on earth and goodwill towards men” when someone asked what I wanted for Christmas. I think my prayer was more selfish and simplistic, “I want to speak and understand German, I would like to find a tech/creative/maker space role in some company until we go back to the USA, and I would like to understand my wife and how my opposite thinks.”
Hmm…maybe there is something to be said about the scientists and the doomsday clock.
I seem to be putting more effort into everything, and seeing little to no results.
Thankfully, I have a lot of experience in working on ideas without seeing results for quite some time. I am not sure if it is a passion? Stupidity? Brain damage? Or the experience and understanding that good things usually take a lot of time to grow into maturation.
Maybe that is what bothered me about the nuclear annihilation clock moving closer towards midnight. We are living in an ever-increasing “instant gratification” world. Taking the time to let things grow doesn’t seem to fit in peoples busy schedules anymore.
Then again, I remember as a kid in early school, we had bomb shelters and were shown films about nuclear attacks and the Russians. In hindsight it is pretty sad and lame. “Duck and cover!” (It was what we were taught, go hide under your desk and cover your head to stop the effects of what were at the time 100-megaton blasts)
My dad had a better solution, “go out and watch it, it should be quite a site, then bend over and kiss your ass goodbye.”
I close thinking of the spot on the bridge, or was it near the bank wall in Hiroshima. There was the shadow of a human being cast into the concrete. I am assuming the person was vaporized in a nanosecond, like the flash from a camera. Yet, the shadow and outline of where the person stood and what they were doing, remained burned into the concrete as a shadow for people in the future to see.
Will we learn from it? Have we learned from it?
Perhaps I am not optimistic about world peace. I try each day to get peace within myself, I try each day to get peace and love with my wife – yet, and it seems to always be a struggle. If I weren’t putting in any effort to grow each day, I would say, “Oh, it is because I am not trying.”
But I am trying – perhaps that is what is frustrating? Even if the entire planet tried – would we have “peace on earth and goodwill towards men?”
That is my blurb of vowels, consonants and thoughts from out of my mind this Sunday – may you have a great week. Can someone tell me where I can find Hario v60 02 coffee filters in Switzerland? Danke!
