Sometimes the seemingly simplest questions in life that people ask are actually rather complicated and require more than a yes or no answer. Yet, our modern society seems to want a complicated world distilled down to the black and white, easily digested bits, no thought needed or desired.
It is like one of my favorite quotes about persecution. If you are being persecuted there is only a black and white view of the problem. If you are the one persecuting, well, you have a million shades of gray. In a sense that is what the American legal system has become.
I answered questions about “selfies” in a psychology forum. I forgot that there were a bunch of psychologists in the group and I had to click “off” getting streams of information from the group, as it was a lot a talk about selfies, not a whole lot about what “self” actually entailed. The other issue is you sort of have to type with one hand in online forums as it is difficult to talk about detailed things that have more than a yes or no answers.
The only people I know that have mastered the “yes” and “no” life, are the old monks that have gone out of the world to try to live their lives in a spiritual way. I have heard some people say “that isn’t living” yet, I ask, “have you ever gone off to be with yourself in stillness and silence before?”
The monks say little to nothing, and the answers to a question tend to be very few words, they usually are correct.
The secular world seems to be more about shooting as many words into the air and saying very little. I marvel at politicians ability to answer nothing yet know that sucking as much face time on camera will help them. “blah blah bla blah….
The reality is it is just as difficult to look inward with extreme focus, as it is to look outward. Ideally, we would be doing a bit of both each day and humanity might change for the better.
Instead, for now. We are stuck in a world every increasing its egocentric view of itself.
Maybe that’s why I post an image from the morning after a huge storm in Colorado last year where more rain fell in a day than the yearly average. The same will probably happen on earth soon. There will be a storm. But always remember, they all do end and the sun comes out again.
Until then, we will all want simple answers in a complicated world. it isn't going to happen.
