Since the beginning of time, man has been looking for an edge to gain a competitive foothold over another. With auto racing, one uses the mind to tinker with machines against the rulebook. All to figure new ways to get around the rules and be faster. In athletics, people use their mind to find ways to tinker with their bodies via medicine and chemistry to gain a competitive edge. Soon, computers will have the ability to think for themselves. How will the world change when they are used in programing machines and people for a competitive advantage?
With athletics, more and more competitors are reaching to the medicine and/or modern chemistry to find an edge to get bigger, faster, stronger, quicker, more agile, or gain more endurance. I am guessing doping has been around since the first competitions. As I mentioned in the previous post, the Incas had a sort of basketball game where the winners got to go sleep with all the cheerleaders and the losers were sacrificed to the gods. What other motivation do you need for taking some chemical help?
Inca coach: “I don’t need to remind you all, but if we don’t win, they kill us. If we win, we get babes and glory. Everyone remember to take your drugs and mystical superhuman syrup before you leave the locker room."
For the average human, a gain of 5-10% in performance will not make much difference to our aspiring athletic life. If you run a 10-minute mile and get to 9:30 or 9minutes, it doesn’t make much of a difference to anything but saying, “I did better!” while having to block out the reality in your mind that you had help in how you got to where you were going. Denial is a powerful tool.
To a world-class sprinter running the 100meters in 10 seconds, and now being able to go 9.5 to 9.0
A new world record. Not just a new one, but a shattered one.
What is the value of a new world record today?
Reporter: “how did you get so fast so quickly?”
Athlete: (with a straight face) “clean living, eating (sponsors cereal name) and training really hard, and making sure i get plenty of sleep every night."
As was mentioned, denial is a powerful tool. It can blind us. Apparently a lot more denial going around than any of us realized?
What will the value be when we come to the singularity where man and machine become one? I don’t see much of a market for couch jockeys watching all natural humans compete cleanly on channel 1 when they can flip to channel two and see the "ANABIONIC" league of man and machine destroying each other for fame, glory, and yes…all that cash.
When the image becomes more important than that people behind it, it opens the door for a lot of situations where dirt is simply pushed under the carpet or in the closet.
Ironically that is the strange behavior of evil. It wants everything hidden in the closet, behind a façade, or in this case the image of a brand.
It is amazing how good the brands have gotten and keeping access, much less knowledge of the closet’s existence, secret.
The cost of allowing the door to open and being honest is simply too high a price and would cost to much to the gods of, "hype, promotion, and spectacle." who want us to think, perhaps believe, we are more than mere humans.
being human is enough for me. what about you?
