The reality of being creative in a world that likes that prefers the status quo has led me to design a work/creative/lab space inside or near where i live. The reason is that once you get used to the aforementioned way of life - you probably will never go back to the status quo. you will see how productive and much time you can save in getting something accomplished.
Please forgive me, I am a bit frustrated. It is 11:45 am and I am actually just starting to get a block of uninterrupted time to brainstorm the swirl that has been racing inside my head since I woke up. There is a portion of the day I guard jealously. That is the moment I wake for prayer and meditation and the few hours it will take my brain to work out whatever thoughts and ideas come out in the frantic chaos of brainstorming.
Years ago and when I did a sales training session for the United States market for our merchandising wing, the basic premise of why entertainment events are special is that it is something different from the normal life of most of the people attending. Much of life is a repetitive schedule in simply spending a great deal of time driving the circle. First there is the fact that many US workers are simply working to live, the second is that unless you are a billionaire, having a family, kids and being able to work and live in close proximity to each other, is not very realistic. One or both of the spouses has a commute, which few people take into consideration the actual time that is spent getting to and from “work.”
It is as if people dismiss, discount, or don’t take into consideration the actual time.
The one group that actually probably abuses this use of time is the way the legal system bills a client. A one-minute call will get you billed for 15 or 30-minute minimum. The irony.
I realize how fortunate and lucky I am when Feld Entertainment said, “go think of any idea.” The experience taught me that all the models of work and the idea of what is success doesn’t have to be something you get paid to go an not enjoy. Research has shown that it is not money or perks that make people happy (they are nice) but rather the satisfaction and interest in the work they do.
If one can’t find something that fills the need to do satisfying work, the second choice is to do work but with and around people you truly enjoy being with
The other part of the entire idea of prayer/meditation and even brainstorming is that there is a singular and a corporate level to each. The early morning time for each in my life is very singular; yet, it is amazing how it can set the tone and pace for anything that comes through the day.
The past week has put me on a path where I can almost see a crystal clear image of solutions for something I have been working on for several years. I just want to run and keep trying, drawing, thinking, reworking, rebuilding, redesigning…. it is the process of many changes and alterations that simply is a normal day in design or creation. It is taking a lump of clay and making something out of it.
What one needs are some segments of uninterrupted time for this process to happen. I guess that is what confuses most people that try to understand me as many live in a world where they don’t see value in change or living in a world where one is always working on something. The world of status quo is just fine for them. Neither idea is wrong or right, but they do clash when they rub together.
“Better is the evil twin of good enough.” Is a translation to a Russian proverb and old nerd friend of mine used to say when we came against the status quo.
Now my mind is racing at how to capture and work out the ideas that were in my brain this morning, wanting to get onto paper…. that had to be delayed…by status quo. Lets see if i still have the ability to trick my mind it is early morning?
