The bike photo really nothing to do with the topic, other than I thought it was cute and called it bike being held prisoner behind a fence, yet it was free to roam inside the space. It lead into the idea of where technology is taking us where the capability for really intelligent software, and “artificial surveillance,” to a level that pretty much will look at everything as suspect. That being a couple of people controlling the power for the data of all, yet, the search and software algorithms are smart enough to learn and teach themselves without ever really having to take time to sleep, eat, go to the bathroom, or get a drink of water.
These systems have and already are in place, have been used for years, but in the next 30-40 years will achieve a level of power they simply didn’t have before. What worries me is within this time frame, the transition will be much like the language translators we have. While you can type in text in one language and most of the time get an idea of what it means, the native of subtle meaning that are “lost in the translation” from a human physiology or psychology to what artificial surveillance “perceives” will probably cause a lot of issues with peoples rights and freedoms.
What will probably happen is a lot of dirt will get pushed under the carpet because no one wants to say that the gobs of monies spent on the idea of security or surveillance simply will never be foolproof. You can take your best shot at making perfect, but the odds are, it will never be quite 100% perfect.
I guess this is the mystery as to why man really doesn’t evolve too much in a shorter amount of time? Man is far from perfect and we tend to see the world in black and white when someone does something to hurt our rights and freedoms, but when we actually hurt another’s right or freedoms, we have a few million shades of gray to justify ourselves and behaviors. It is as if the idea of seeing self through the same filters we look and judge others are immiscible.
Instead, we plunge trillions of dollars into the idea that we can create a perfectly safe and wonderful world, or at least the illusion of it to cover the reality that it can all change in a nanosecond.
This will be the world in 30 years, should mankind make it that long without another horrific conflict between himself. It will be the never sleeping machines, trying to do translation in an artificial surveillance world that hasn’t mastered “native’ meaning. It might work very well for the area where it was created, but it probably won’t do a very good job in other parts of the world.
Maybe this email simply is a page for me to look at the augmanity tools today. I never had an idea that could do so much good, or could be applied with so much “creep” factor before. In a sense, it is like the bike in the photo. Locked behind a fence. It can ride around all it wants inside that space, but it can’t really get out.
Will this be the future of artificial surveillance at a societal level? You let people have the illusion they think they are free, yet it is just a facade?
