The data packets keep flowing, bits and bytes moving at ever increasing speeds, with more capacity to send more information, yet, what messages and stories are we really telling?
I don’t really get where media is going. I realize the past with deep story coverage with newspapers is a dying animal in the united states and some parts of the world. The buzzword idea of “new media” that I heard 25 years ago with the first wave of the internet, and must confess, I giggled and thought, “the stories will be the same, how you report it will be different.” i really didn't think it would dilute to this level.
while reporting changed, has it changed for the better? News is more about access, or reporting any possible scenario or concept, no matter how remote the odds or probabilities. i blame a lot of it on the advent of the presidential election based on polling to have platforms for people to hire armies of spin doctors to the cost of over a billion dollars for that last election to skew data to say whatever they want (no matter how remote the possibility.) today, I think the collusion has simply come to a place where everyone in the game is simply making too much money to really want to change anything - all players are getting enough perks and benefits to ask, "why should we change this?"
What has this phenomenon allowed? The ability for anyone to get famous by doing little to nothing, just garner hits. Sigmund Freud would have loved the Internet today, “I can study the abnormal, to define normal. Who knew reality TV would be the barometer for how low man can go?”
I remember being taught that reporting was the ability to tell both sides of a story with facts, and as minimal bias as possible. If one could do that, you would allow the reader to get the information to allow for the reader to make up their mind. The truth would be in there somewhere.
To get to a global truth, I remember setting up an example and finding an issue in the world and going to the IPL.org (internet public library) to do a crude test by reading how the story was reported in a variety of newspapers within countries with vastly different political views. A microcosmic example would be to sit in Europe and flip through each of the various countries television news programs, watch each of them, and somehow, through some law of media the truth poked its head through all the various different reporting to resonate somewhere in the heart.
Anymore the truth appears to be much like statistics and number quantification – you can make them say anything you wish.
.The aforementioned article on the coffee shops with “seating” just had me chuckle a bit, as I looked at the design aesthetic and the pretty images and said, “what is so special about all this?”
Perhaps I have just traveled all over the planet looking for the ideal coffee shop and know it is simply the people that make it. Reading the article had me think, “anymore, I keep seeing the coffee shop of the future being single seat tables with one chair, sort of like going to school, where everyone has a usb port and wireless connection and can order their café and then sit down and stare at their mobile, just like everyone else in the shoppe.”
The past few weeks have been a collision of a foreign culture, language, technology progression and a bit of everything else in my life. I have to fight for the quiet time to brainstorm and work with an open mind in a society that no matter how nice and wonderful it is, doesn’t really like things that go outside of the lines of the coloring book called life.
I think I will pull out the design plans for the lab in Colorado and modify them a bit. Take the brainstorm café ideas and incorporate them into the space where if I do it right, I will be encapsulated in nature to think. Yes, there will be a satellite link, and once a week I will drive into town to pick up the coffee beans from whatever roaster has the best beans in the moment. I will invite people up to work/play/think – most will say no, “it's too far, aren’t there mountain lions there? I don’t have enough time, and I am too busy.”
Yesterday I was excited about a path for the largest of the Augmanity technologies. I am sorry I can’t just blab all about it and how it works - at this time I just have to keep my mouth shut and work on it. The core issue was how people that are different interact in life. The ones that do come to the new lab will probably say, “I had no idea the world was so noisy. I see why you ended up here. Can I please have more coffee? is it ok if i stay a while and unplug for a bit?"
