Christkind comes today. It is a big day in Switzerland.
It is a European tradition that the tree is mysteriously put up, decorated, and all the gifts are left under the tree by Christkind. Who when she is done, she plays music or rings a bell and then the kids (and adults like me with a childlike heart) walk into a room with a tree decorated with lit candles, ornaments and presents under the tree.
It is not the build up that we have in America, where trees go up after thanksgiving or the St. Nick's day and you have a few weeks to enjoy the decorations. Here it is much more of an in your face, “Here you go, it’s Christmas! Not a burning bush, but rather, a lit tree to let you know I was here!”
In some respects the Americans are a bit more helpful in that we have the tree and decorations done already. Santa just has to worry about presents. We give him cookies and milk to help fuel him and the reindeer as he delivers all the presents.
The universal element is the little kids seem suspended in the magic of Christmas. Their eyes marvel in wonderment and, “Wow, Christkind did all that! How?”
We won’t go into the details of the road crew that has to work behind the scenes and how there seems to be a coordinated mass of children all wandering the streets or going to the movie at the exact same time of the day, more concentrated on what will soon be Christkind coming to their home instead than, “why are all my friends here too?”
I guess that is simply the joy of Christmas, then we grow up. It is ironic that I realize now after looking at how “normal” works in the world, that the element of creativity and childlike wonderment can easily get suffocated or squashed on the planet. It is because the adults are afraid to open up and allow for that state of childlike wonderment that still exists inside them.
Someone told them they have to be a grown up, never create, and just keep all the right plugs in the right space. My prayer for you all this Christmas season is that the childlike heart and wonderment comes to your home this holiday season, that young or old, the magical of element of Christmas, and the childlike heart comes to each member of your family for some time.
Merry Christmas. May there be peace on earth and goodwill to all men.
