The normal world seems to have evolved to a series of times, places and space where the norm of people seem to all be going off to do some sort of function in society or their life to survive. I have always asked “why?" preferring to ask many questions and seeking answers. In most cases there is usually good reason for why something is done and a rule is put in place. It could be for efficiency, control, the betterment of the group versus one individual, etc. But many times when you ask "why?" people are not able to give a good answer beyond "we always did it that way" or "traditions says we do it that way." These are the answers that drive me a bit crazy.
Creativity requires the discipline to consistently spend time in a working space, playing with ideas.
It doesn’t mean one simply works when inspired, but it appears the more creative you get, the more you see that the normal life of 9-5 and segments of time for various activities that are learned, for example, who says you need to watch TV and be programmed? The more creative you get, it appears your mind is always running 24 hours a day on the process of looking, hearing, seeing, imagining, and wondering about pretty much everything.
It causes problems in the normal world. People appear to want a happy life, no stress, time to just spend hanging around not really doing much of anything.
I used to work late into the night and think that was creative. Now, it is the first moments I wake up that I find really are the foundation and inspiration for a way the day can go. I am not sure why? Perhaps it is normal function of aging? It is the time the mind wakes free of the clutter of noises in the world?
Here would be my perfect day outline -
3:00 am – not sure why, but I seem to get up at this hour to pray
6:00 am - wake back up and meditate and pray
6:30 am – brainstorm till brain gets tired - (can be 30 minutes, to usually 90, on rare days hours)
8:00 am – breakfast
8:30 am – sketch out plan of work from brainstorm
9:00 am – refining the ideas, morning conversations, etc.
LUNCH - this is a moving target, usually I forget what time it is
3:00 pm – exercise
3:30 pm – further refine ideas down to final, or work on straight business models
6:00 pm - brain shut down, so I start cooking some meal with my hands
6:30 pm - dinner
7:30 pm - reading, image modeling and manipulation, and prayer/meditation till I go to sleep…
This would be an ideal day format – alas, reality has it work a bit different, especially when you bring other people into the equation. Notice, that there is no time wasted in a commute. Ideally there is one dedicated room to brainstorm that adjoins a working prototype room and there is minimal distraction with the normal “noise” of the world. Some might consider this selfish, but I have to ask, “why is this selfish if one uses their time in a different way than the norm?”
I will be getting a call from the concrete company in Colorado this week as to can he get loads of premix trucks up the drive? The reason is that there are two designs for the spaces. One is using concrete, as we will be off the grid and it allows for more stable temperature control. The second will be the stick building of the barn/loft on the site. Both ideas are wonderful, and I am so looking forward to seeing which direction we go.
Whenever this happens, my day will be lived with the rhythm of nature, I will simply get up when the dawn happens and then I will have all of the plants, animals, and alternative energy tests to go along with the aforementioned rhythm of creation. The great part will be I have the tools and space right there to think up an idea and simply fabricate it that moment with the lab. After all the time planning and thinking, as frustrated as I get that reality takes more time to roll out, I am excited about the Agrowvillage and Augmanity projects taking off to a new level.
Yes, a bit of heaven on earth in nature with the occasional commute for church, meetings, and to pick up delivery of my coffee beans will break up the weekends. The idea of throwing some BBQ or fantastic feasts for friends and family that comes to visit, sit on the porch in the beauty of the views…keeps me going
I am such a dork.
If you could plan your ideal day, what would it really look like? How would change it? What would you eliminate about it? What would you add to it? Have a great day.
